The highly transmissible Omicron subvariant BA.5 continues fueling an increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths — even as Americans fly, take vacations and participate in crowded summer festivities.

President Joe Biden is isolating after being infected with the highly infectious BA.5 subvariant and is “responding to therapy as expected,” according to his White House physician. Biden received the COVID-19 antiviral Paxlovid, which is given to people during the first five days of a COVID-19 infection to halt the virus from replicating.
