Celebrate Juneteenth with the African American Museum of Iowa

The African American Museum of Iowa will celebrate Juneteenth starting with its annual festival. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids. The event will consist of live performances, local businesses, vendors and activities for all. Registration for the coloring contest, sweet potato pie competition or talent show can be completed online. The celebration will continue into the following week when the museum will have extended gallery hours from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday June 19.

Attendees on this day will also have the opportunity to view a special screening of “Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom” presented by Our Daily Bread starting at 6:30 p.m. The documentary will discuss the history of Juneteenth and an inside look of where the first Juneteenth celebration occurred. Juneteenth is recognized as a national holiday in commemoration of the official end of slavery in the U.S.
