Tell us about your work in Cedar Rapids.
Tasha Lard is cofounder of Black Professionals of Johnson County & Linn County, based in Cedar Rapids.
Describe your work:
As the co-founder, I am instrumental in creating a platform and community that strives for the advancement, empowerment and support of Black professionals. My primary responsibility is to collaborate with other like-minded individuals to establish and maintain a network that fosters professional growth and development and mentorship opportunities for Black professionals. I play a pivotal role in organizing networking events and discussions that promote diversity, inclusion and equality in the workplace. I serve as a voice and advocate for the needs, concerns and achievements of Black professionals, working towards creating a more inclusive and equitable environment for everyone. Overall, as the co-founder of Black Professionals of Johnson County & Linn County, I play a vital role in facilitating positive change and creating a strong network that uplifts and champions Black professionals in these areas.
What inspired you to begin this journey?
What inspired me to begin the journey of creating an organization for Black professionals in Johnson County and Linn County was my own personal journey. I realized that there is a lack of safe spaces for us in our communities to be our most authentic selves. This realization struck a chord with me and motivated me to take action. Additionally, my partner and I observed similar challenges and issues faced by Black professionals in our communities. We saw a need for a supportive network that could address these concerns provide resources, and create a sense of belonging for Black professionals. It was this combination of personal experiences and the recognition of a broader problem that inspired us to embark on this journey and create an organization that could make a positive impact on the lives of Black professionals in our area.
What is your motto or guiding principle in life?
When operating in the capacity of love nothing can stop you.
What advice would you give to Black youth who want to work in your field?
My advice would be to continue pursuing their passion and never lose sight of their goals. It is essential to stay determined and focused, especially in the face of adversity that may arise due to systemic barriers. Operating in the capacity of love is crucial as it fosters an environment of understanding, empathy, and collaboration. It allows you to build connections, bridge gaps, and effect positive change within the field. By embracing this mindset, you can actively challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and create opportunities for yourself and others. Always remember that your unique perspective and voice are invaluable assets that can contribute to the advancement and diversity of the field.
How can the Black community better support you?
The Black community has a crucial role to play in supporting the Black professionals of Johnson County & Linn County organization. First and foremost, it is essential to actively engage and participate in the initiatives and events organized by the organization. By attending workshops, networking events and industry conferences, community members can not only show their support but also provide valuable insights and experiences to Black professionals. Additionally, the community can help spread awareness about the organization through word of mouth and social media platforms, encouraging others to get involved. Furthermore, offering mentorship opportunities to Black professionals can be immensely beneficial. By sharing their knowledge, skills and experiences, community members can help uplift and guide fellow professionals in their careers. Lastly, it is crucial for the community to patronize and support Black-owned businesses and professionals. By deliberately choosing to work with and support Black professionals, the community can contribute to their growth and success in Johnson County & Linn County. It is through collective efforts and support that the Black community can create a thriving environment for Black professionals in the area.
