Turkey, dressing and greens: What’s on your plate this Thanksgiving?
It might just be another day off, but we’re still going to eat well. What’s on your plate this holiday?
We asked members of Black Iowa News’ Inside Black Iowa Facebook group what Thanksgiving dishes they’re most excited about. Here’s what Iowans across the state had to say:
- Lori Young, Des Moines: “Turkey with plenty of cornbread dressing is a must — just like my Momma used to make! It’s so good the next day, too!”
- Mcintosh Waylee, Urbandale: “Thanksgiving ain’t right without some Liberian rice bread.”
- Lavell Martin, Waukee: From his wife Charlotte Eby Martin: “Gooey butter cake that my husband makes. It’s a St. Louis specialty, and so good.”
- Michelle Edwards, Cedar Rapids: “Thanksgiving has to have my sisters’ cornbread dressing and sweet potatoes.”
- Pamela Johnson, Inside Black Iowa Facebook Group “Greens.”
- Terri Powell, Burlington: “Swedish Tea Ring is a must for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We all join in and make them together as a tradition, and my grandchildren have so much fun. We all look forward to it every year.”
- Kathey Cheathem Eady, West Des Moines: “I absolutely have to have dressing like my mother made with cranberry sauce. I won’t attempt to eat it if there is no gravy and cranberry sauce.”
- Tim Wilborn, Des Moines: “It’s not Thanksgiving without my smoked Turkey. I’m actually selling them this year.”
- Unteria Ward, Dubuque: “My grandma’s anything but mostly her cornbread dressing and desserts.”
- LaToya Scott, Des Moines: “Carmel cake is a must have in my house. We get visitors that come and call for my mom’s cake.”
- John Olsen, Ankeny “Sweet potato casserole! Recipe came from my brother’s mother-in-law.”
- Daryl Williams, Omaha, NE: “Must have some homemade turkey and dressing!!”
- Curtis Taylor, Iowa City: “Dressing.”
- Kate Pimlott, Des Moines: “Ostakaka. It’s a Swedish dessert.”
- Adriane Smith, Coralville: “Must have homemade dressing and freshly made cranberry sauce.”
