The Willkie House, a Black community-based organization, is set to celebrate and honor its legacy of over 100 years in the Des Moines area. This weekend, they will host a ceremony and an open house to revisit the past and discuss the present and future plans. The historical marker ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sep. 16. The open house to view the building and take a tour will be from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 16, and Sunday, Sep. 17. The event is free to attend and open to the community.
The Willkie House was established in 1917 and has occupied its current building for 72 years, a significant milestone for the organization.
“We’re incredibly excited to commemorate the installation of our historical marker. It signifies the Willkie House’s long history as a vital part of the Des Moines community, serving children and families of all backgrounds over generations,” said Alex Rice, Executive Director of the Willkie House, in a press release. The organization provides educational and creative programs for kids aged 5-12.
