Black Iowa News welcomes new intern Melayna Brown

Melayna Brown is Black Iowa News’ first summer intern. We look foward to working with her and seeing her contributions.

Melayna Brown, 14, has joined Black Iowa News as a summer intern. This is her first job! Melayna is a 10th grader at J.W. Reed Christian Academy who has an “extreme love for words.” She is a part of the Y-ExCL (youths excel into careers and leadership) program at the Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families (EKD). Melayna will work 16 hours a week for Black Iowa News and attend a 4-hour weekly leadership development session at EKD.

Melayna’s first day was Monday, June 17. She is already hard at work reviewing Black Iowa News’ website and social media sites. Melayna, who likes to volunteer in her church community, write poetry and has a 3.79 GPA, has already come up with a great idea for a summer feature in the upcoming Black Iowa Newspaper. We will be out in Des Moines next week talking to youth about what they like best about the summer, their favorite music and more. Great idea, Melayna.

Black Iowa News welcomes Melayna! We are happy to have you!
