SUMMARY:Convivium Urban Farmstead - Black Men's Wellness Group
DESCRIPTION:Black Men’s Wellness Group\n  \nDate: August 4\, 2026 \nTime: 6-8p.m. \nLocation: Convivium Urban Farmstead\, 2811 Jackson St. Dubuque IA \nFirst Tuesday of each month \n  \n \nConvivium Urban Farmstead is a nonprofit whose mission is to improve life through food. We accomplish our mission through classes\, demonstrations and experiences that use food to foster connection to ourselves\, our community and the environment. These programs cover three areas of the food cycle: the production (GROW)\, prepartion and preservation (COOK) and the sharing and enjoyment of food (EAT). \nConvivium was founded on the idea that most of the world’s problems stems from a lack of connection—to our own health\, to our neighbors and community\, and to the environment. At Convivium\, we hope to foster this connection—or reconnection—to those areas of our lives and we use FOOD to do it. Why food? Because it is universal. Everyone eats! And the ritual of eating is more than just satisfying our hunger—it involves the farmer that grew it; the soul\, sun and rain that gave it life; the person who prepared it; and the people with whom we enjoy it. \n

SUMMARY:Your Homeownership Dreams Can Come True!
DESCRIPTION:Your Homeownership Dreams Can Come True!\nDate: August 5\, 2026 \nTime: 6-8p.m. \nLocation: African American Museum of Iowa\, 55 12th Ave\, Cedar Rapids\, IA 52401 \n  \n \n  \nThe next Journey to Homeownership Class is August 5th! \nThere is one in-person class scheduled. Additional classes and events will be added each month.  Please use the links below to register (registration required).  \n Click here to register! *** Tickets open starting July 24th\, at 8:30 AM ***  \nQuestions: Contact Bridgett Robinson or call 515-273-1373. \nAs the One Economy report\, The State of Black Polk County\, points out\, there is a large disparity in homeownership for the Black/African American community. Many capable African American families are losing out on the opportunity to own their own home in a neighborhood they either grew up in or raised children in. This\, in turn\, decreases the chances of generational wealth with these families. \nFor more information on the One Economy Reports\, please visit their website! \nNFC knows that our programs may not fit a borrower’s exact situation\, but there are several other programs throughout the community that may fit your needs. Though this program is originally being launched to serve African American households\, it will be extended to other communities of color in the future.  \nThis program is made possible through the CDFI Fund and donors to date: Wells Fargo Housing Foundation\, MDRC at The Bridge\, and private donations.  \n

SUMMARY:Iowa Farmers of Color Cookout
DESCRIPTION:Iowa Famers of Color Cookout\n  \nTime: 12:00p.m. – 3:00p.m \nDate: August 16\, 2026 \nLocation: We Arose Farm\, 306 Peek St. Waterloo\, IA 50703 \n  \n \n  \nWe Arose in Waterloo grew out of a desire to promote community wellness–both the physical health of its people and the strength of its connections. We did so by addressing three primary needs: affordable access to fresh produce to promote healthier lifestyles\, for local farmers to be less siloed in their outreach efforts\, and for the community to nurture\, and be supported by these issues. \nSince its inception\, We Arose has grown to include solutions for all of these needs and more. With programs like Greens to Go\, We Ride\, Wine Exchange\, and We Arose Gardens–anyone and everyone in Waterloo has a place at We Arose. While each program relies on the central hub for its mission and continuity\, they are nourished and managed by partnerships between numerous individuals and local organizations.

SUMMARY:SugarHill Gang at Iowa State Fair
DESCRIPTION:SugarHill Gang\nLocation: Iowa State Fair – Susan Knapp Amphitheater -FREE stage \nTime: 8:00 p.m. August 20\, 2026 \n  \n \n  \nIn 1979\, the SugarHill Gang crashed through the walls of the urban cities and into the mainstream of society with the first worldwide rap hit\, “Rapper’s Delight.” Wonder Mike (Michael Wright) and Master Gee (Guy O’Brien) had teamed up with Henry Jackson (pka Big Bank Hank) to become the now famous SugarHill Gang. SugarHill Gang is believed by many to be the first professional Hip Hop group\, because they introduced to the masses (both in the United States and overseas) this unprecedented genre of music. “Rapper’s Delight” eventually sold over 8 million copies\, and went on to be the biggest selling rap single of all time.  Even today\, it continues to appeal to audiences of all ages.  Shortly thereafter\, the SugarHill Gang released such hits as “Apache\,” “8th Wonder” and “Living in the Fast Lane.”   Wonder Mike and Master Gee teamed up with Henry Williams (pka Hendogg) and DJ T. Dynasty both who has performed with the group for 20 years and counting creating new music\, while still pleasing the crowds with their greatest hits. In the Summer of 2009\, they released their first song in 25 years with international DJ phenom Bob Sinclair called “LaLa Song\,” which quickly became an uber hit overseas\, securing Song of the Year for many European countries\, including Italy.  The hit single is currently being released in the United States.   The SugarHill Gang continue their tradition of creating a party atmosphere that makes everyone dance the night away as they perform for sold out crowds throughout the world. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Black Men’s Wellness Group\n  \nDate: September 1\, 2026 \nTime: 6-8p.m. These programs cover three areas of the food cycle: the production (GROW)\, preparation and preservation (COOK) and the sharing and enjoyment of food (EAT).
