Highlighting the history of Black Culture through Art, Performances, Fashion, and Food
Dubuque’s upcoming Juneteenth celebration weekend will feature three days of activities.
The 16th annual Juneteenth Freedom Celebration, hosted by Dubuque Multicultural Family Center, will be held June 19-21, according to an online announcement.
A History Retold event will be held from 5:45 to 9 p.m. June 19 at Multicultural Family Center, 1157 Central Ave.
A Picnic in the Park event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. June 20 at Jackson Park, 1500 Main St.
The event features a talent show with cash prizes, raffles, a bounce house, all-ages games, free food and food trucks.
A Prayer and Praise event featuring a variety of Dubuque congregations will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 21 at Multicultural Family Center.
Juneteenth has been celebrated since June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, officially declaring the end of slavery in the state, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Also called Emancipation Day, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
