Contributor Bio — Matthew Bruce
Meet Matthew Bruce, a new freelance writer for Black Iowa News. He’ll cover the intersections of society, culture, sports, science and politics.
My name is Matthew Bruce aka Maté Muhammad. I am a native of Des Moines, IA, and a proud graduate of Des Moines East High School’s class of 2014.

In the fall of 2014, I fell in love with the beautiful tradition of the Black struggle for justice and equality in the wake of the Ferguson uprising. I joined a movement called “Black Hawkeyes” on the campus of the University of Iowa. In 2020, in the midst of the George Floyd uprisings, I came back home to Des Moines and founded Des Moines Black Lives Matter, which later became the Des Moines Black Liberation Movement. I officially reverted to the Islamic faith, having said my Shahada in 2024, and I am currently a student at DMACC in the Paralegal Studies program. My vision for my work with Black Iowa News is that, Inshallah, I may be able to use my writing to help galvanize community action and spread awareness about issues pertaining to economics, politics and social justice.
