Candlelight Vigil planned for two Des Moines teens killed at Starts Right Here, families seek GoFundMe donations

A candlelight vigil is planned at 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at Starts Right Here for the victims of Monday’s shooting in Des Moines.

A candlelight vigil to honor the lives of two teens killed in a shooting on Monday at Start Right Here, an educational program for at-risk teens operated by rapper Will Keeps, will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at the program, 455 SW. 5th St.

The victims are Gionni Dameron, 18, and Rashad Carr, 16, both of Des Moines. Keeps, the program’s founder and president who was shot twice, is recovering and remains hospitalized in serious, but stable condition, according to the program’s website. Police have charged Preston Walls, an 18-year old Des Moines resident with two counts of 1st-degree murder, attempted murder and criminal gang participation.

Healing Space

Those hurting in the aftermath of the shooting are invited to a drop-in healing space at noon on Saturday at Forward Consulting LLC, which provides therapy services, at 4309 University Ave. in Des Moines.
